Paris Weekend Break

A Paris Weekend Break is typically one for couples wanting to enjoy the romantic delights of this city but it has many more facets than just this.

To truly feel the atmosphere of Paris, you only have to wonder round one morning, in one of its many side streets and come across a market. There are over 60 open air markets and 18 covered markets, along with pedestrian streets where shops put stalls outside. They occur usually twice or three times weekly and you can find almost everything from food to books, clothes and wines. Ask at your hotel where is the nearest to you.

Entertainment and the nightlife in Paris may seem daunting at first, due to the extreme variety that greets you. To help there are many publications available which give information on whats on: Parsiscope or Officiel de Spectacles (both come out on Wednesday), Zurban and LYLO (which is free and gives info on rock concerts, live music etc) to name but a few.
Tickets for cultural events and concerts can be bought from Fnac (which has nine offices in Paris) or from Virgin Megastores.

There is a vast calender of opera and ballet events, situated in the Opéra Bastille, Palais Garnier, Opéra Comique, Salle Pleyel and Théâtre Musical de Paris. Tickets usually go on sale from the box office fourteen days before the concert and there are usually special prices for those under 26 and over 65, or students.

Paris also offers lush areas where you can relax away from the busy pace of the city. The Jardin des Plantes is a 24-hectare botanical garden (metro Gare d'Austerlitz or Jussieu), where you will find tropical green houses, an Alpine garden and a menagerie (mini zoo). Jardin de l'Atlantique (metro Montparnasse Bienvenüe), in the 15th arrondissement, is 3.5 hectares of landscaped terraces, in which there is a small museum dedicated to Jean Moulin, a resistance leader during World War II. Jardins du Trocadéro (metro Trocadéro), complete with fountains and statues illuminated at night, can be entered from Pont d'Iéna near the Eiffel Tower. In the Bois de Boulogne (metro Porte Maillot), you will find Parc de Bagatelle; beautiful gardens surrounding the Château de Bagatelle, Jardin Shakespeare and Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil. There is also Jardin d'Acclimatation, an area orientated for children.

Although Versailles is not really somewhere you can go with only a weekend in Paris but it is worth consideration if you are planning a longer stay. It is 23Km southwest of Paris and is by far the most majestic and most famous château in France. It was built in the mid 17th century by Louis XIV and it is not only the size and luxury of the chateau that impress but also its extensive gardens, with the Grand Canal and the fountains Bassin de Neptune and Bassin d'Apolon. Well worth a visit if time permits!
